If you looked at the sky over Broward
County on Wednesday, you might have seen some cryptic skywriting - a weired shaped heart
and the letters "HWO." It wasn't a love letter.
Nike is considering advertising through
skywriting and asked Aerial Sign to show what the logo looks like at 10,000 feet.
"We were just practicing doing some of these Nike swooshes," Butler said.
"It's part of a presentation we're doing for them."
As for those letters - HWO-they're a
Christmas present from Aerial Sign to the Broward County Aviation Department, Butler
said. HWO is the Federal Aviation Administration's identification code for

This sky-written version of the Nike
swoosh logo had Broward County residents craning their necks on Wednesday. The

where Aerial Sign Co. is based.
Technically, they stand for "Hollywood," even though the airport is in Pembroke
Pines.
Aerial Sign Co. had photographers shoot the sky written letters with the North
Perry control tower in the foreground. Those photos will be given to the Aviation
Department, which oversees the airport, for its 1998 calendar.
The skywriting was performed |
just north
of North Perry in the early afternoon by Butler's son, Jim Butler Jr., and Tim West.
Butler is well known in aviation circles as South Florida's grandmaster of
skywriting. It's not nearly as easy as it looks, Butler said.
"You can make a big mistake," he said. "One time I did some
writing for Arrow Shirts, I left the 'R' out of shirts, and they were all upset with
me."
Wednesday's skywriting was done with two planes, a Rawdon T-1, which is a military
trainer, and a modified Cessna 182. Because it was a cloudless day, the trails of
smoke could be seen for miles.
"Chances are some little kid in Bimini was looking up saying, 'what does HWO
stand for?'" Butler said. |
